Millions of Stem Cells in Days

Listen with webReader

millions of stem cellsA new way has been discovered to produce millions of stem cells in days instead of months, using a new technique called OPTi-OX, a new platform technology that optimises the way of switching on genes in human stem cells. The produced stem cells can create any tissue, including those which are typically hard to access, such as brain cells. Besides brain cells these stem cells can develop neurons, oligodendrocytes, and muscle cells, but in reality any cell type in a very short time.

This research holds a great potential in the treatment of various diseases, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and heart disease.

Age Reversing Drug?

Listen with webReader

age reversal drugA simple substance had a surprising rejuvenating effect mice, which might lead to a safe age reversing drug. The drug called nicotinamide mononucleotide (or NMN) was added to the drinking water of aging mice. After just one week the tissue samples from the two year old and the two months old mice were indistinguishable.

The NMN boosts the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) level in the cells, which is critical to repairing the DNA.

Human trials will begin in months, and the drug can hit the shelves in a few years.

Electroacupuncture Releases Stem Cells

Listen with webReader

Fletcher A. White, PhDAmazing new discovery has been made by more than 40 scientists at institutions in the United States and South Korea led by Indiana University School of Medicine researchers. According to the study electroacupuncture administered at specific immune points in the brain activated the hypothalamus leading to the release of reparative mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the bloodstream, that can help promote tissue repair and relieve injury-induced pain.

The research is still in the animal experimentation stage, hopefully in the near future human trial can began. Is this going to lead us into a revolution in treating injuries?

Thought Communication

Listen with webReader

mind recorderWhat if one day thought communication will become possible. To many people the prospect of reading one’s mind is frightening. How could we possibly live in the world where our most secret thoughts are no longer hidden from others?

But for people who are unable to speak, the ability to communicate by thought would be God-sent.

The technology already exists where brain implants are used to manipulate robotic limbs using thoughts, and now researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, are working on translating brain signals directly into audible speech using a voice synthesizer.

Stem cells to grow new cartilage

Listen with webReader

stem cells grow new cartilageThe days are approaching when medical science will be able to grow body parts. In collaboration between Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Cytex Therapeutics Inc. in Durham, N.C., using one’s own stem cells scientists has succeeded in growing new cartilage on a 3-D, biodegradable, synthetic scaffold has been molded into the precise shape of a hip joint.

Combining it with gene therapy they programmed the cartilage to release anti-inflammatory molecules to stop arthritis returning. Continue reading
